Pop Warner Alumna Rises to Resident Physician

Sydney Record, M.D., a proud alumna of the Pop Warner Naples Hurricanes (2003-2011), recently began her career as a doctor after two seasons cheering for the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes. A Harvard graduate in Molecular and Cellular Biology with minors in Spanish and Psychology, she continued cheerleading at Duke School of Medicine while pursuing her studies. Now a surgical resident specializing in oncology, Sydney is also part of Science Cheerleaders, a nonprofit of over 300 cheerleaders in STEM careers dedicated to inspiring young girls in STEM.

We recently had a great chat with Sydney.

What is your favorite Pop Warner memory?
My first Pop Warner Nationals was unforgettable! Competing alongside talented cheerleaders from across the country was inspiring and motivated me to return every year. Returning as a Science Cheerleader last December, I felt so proud seeing the dedication of today’s cheerleaders and how much the program has grown.

What are the 1-2 main lessons you learned from cheerleading?
Starting cheer at age five taught me that a smile and positive attitude make any challenge easier. I use this in my job today, remembering that staying upbeat can make a tough day better for everyone.

Why continue cheerleading while in medicine?
Cheer is a core part of who I am. Balancing cheer with medical school gave me a vital outlet and made me a better student. I’ve joined a volunteer cheer squad that fits into my residency schedule, keeping this passion alive.

How has cheerleading impacted you professionally?
Cheer taught me the importance of teamwork, trust, and understanding everyone’s role, which is crucial in healthcare. Working in the operating room is just like being part of a team in cheerleading, where every member’s role is vital to success.

Any words of advice for current Pop Warner cheerleaders?
Anything worth doing will be challenging at times. Remember why you started and lean on your teammates and coaches for support. Cheer is a tough sport requiring hard work, and the skills you’re developing will serve you in life. If you can give your all in a cheer routine, you can achieve anything!
