The biggest wins happen in the classroom

Earning the starting quarterback role for the New England Patriots, throwing nine touchdowns and completing 70% of his passes over his first seven games has made for a pretty impressive start to Mac Jones’ NFL career. Coming just a year after leading University of Alabama to a national championship and being named a Heisman Trophy finalist, it’s safe to say he has had his share of success on the football field.

But converting third downs and throwing touchdowns isn’t really where Jones serves as a model for young student-athletes. It’s his ability to balance academics and athletics, something he was recognized for years ago as a Pop Warner All American Scholar playing for the Mandarin Tigers in Jacksonville. He continued to excel in college, being named Academic All-American and the nation’s top D1 football scholar last year.

“Being an Academic All-American is something I’ve always dreamed of and it has been a goal of mine for as long as I can remember,” said Jones. “Through hard work and help from close family, friends, teachers and mentors, I have long understood the importance of school, learning and leadership. Thank you to everyone who helped me along my academic journey.”

Pop Warner is proud to be the oldest national youth football organization but we’re even prouder of our emphasis on academic excellence and the work that our student-athletes do in the classroom. We believe that the standards we have set give children a sense of responsibility and an appreciation for academics and athletics that will help them develop later on in life.

It hasn’t been easy to balance the two during the pandemic. In some cases, kids were kept away from both sports and the classroom last year. The return to both required adjustment, patience and discipline.

So as we head into the home stretch of the football, cheer and dance seasons and get closer to the end of the first semester for many schools, I wanted to take a moment and tell our student-athletes I’m proud of you. Your commitment to school and athletics will pay off. And I want to say thank you to the family members, educators and coaches who are helping to support our kids along the way. That’s what Pop Warner is about.

Sincerely,

Jon Butler
