The Art of Getting Back Up

These past few weeks have been a treat for sports fans. From the excitement of the Super Bowl to the incredible performances at the Winter Olympic Games, we’ve witnessed the very best athletes competing at the highest level.

But while championships and gold medals capture headlines, what may be even more powerful is what we see in moments of defeat.

Take Drake Maye. After a tough loss marked by turnovers and missed opportunities, he didn’t point fingers or make excuses. Instead, he spoke about resilience. He called the loss “fuel.” He talked about bouncing back, about leaning on his teammates, and about using that difficult feeling as motivation to return stronger.

"I think that's the biggest thing about life is you're going to have times like this. It's how you bounce back," Maye said. "This is fuel. If it's not, then I don't know what this feeling can do for you."

Or look at Ilia “The Quad God” Malinin. A dominant champion and overwhelming favorite on the Olympic stage, he fell twice during his free skate. The result wasn’t what he or anyone expected. But what followed was remarkable. He congratulated the gold medalist, faced the media with honesty and composure, and openly acknowledged the pressure he felt. No excuses. Just accountability, humility, and perspective.

That is what sports teach at their very best.

At Pop Warner, we celebrate wins. But we value something even greater: character. The ability to get back up. To support teammates. To take responsibility. To turn disappointment into determination.

Our young athletes may not yet be competing on the Olympic stage, but they face their own versions of pressure, setbacks, and adversity every season. The lessons they learn now — about resilience, sportsmanship, and perseverance — will carry with them long after their Pop Warner days.

The true measure of an athlete isn’t just how they win. It’s how they respond when they don’t.

Let’s continue to encourage our young athletes to compete hard, support one another, and, when they stumble, to get back up and try again.

Best,
