Pop Warner Super Bowl: Division I Midget Action, Pop Warner College Student Reports.
All 32 Division I football teams were in action today at the Pop Warner Super Bowl at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista , FL. Today's games featured the first ever Pop Warner female quarterback, several dominating performances and the Division I Midget Championship game teams are set.
The morning Jr. Pee Wee division featured the matchup we were all waiting for, the Division I Harvey Colts versus the Southeast Apaches. Leading the charge for the Colts was quarterback Jasmine Plummer, the first ever quarterback to lead her team to the Pop Warner Super Bowl. The young girl was poised and her team came ready to play, but they didn't have enough to defeat the Southwest Region champion Southeast Apaches (TX) in the Jr. Pee Wee division. The Apaches defeated the Colts 13-2 in a game dominated by solid defense and a battle of turnovers. The Colts had a couple of chances to score late in the game, thanks to a nice kickoff return and a few brilliant passes from Plummer, but were unable to find enough offense to overcome the 11-point lead. The clock ran out, and the Southeast Apaches had themselves a 13-2 victory. They move on to play the Asbury Park Bishops (NJ), who defeated the Kailua Mustangs today 13-0. The Colts move on to face the Mustangs in Saturday's consolation game. Both games are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. In the other Division I Jr. Pee Wee games, the Durham Eagles kept up the North Carolina winning streak by defeating the Meriden Raiders (CT) 32-6, and the Florida City Razorbacks controlled a good Palo Alto Knights (CA) team by the score of 30-0 in the first of six shutouts today.
In the Pee Wee Division, shutouts were the name of the game. The PG County Storm continued the strong showing by Maryland football teams as they blanked the New Britain Raiders (CT) 32-0. They move on to face the Oak Grove Razorbacks (CA), who handed the Winston-Salem Falcons (NC) their first loss by the score of 22-0. The Palmetto Raiders notched a touchdown in all four quarters, as they went on to defeat the Holy Family Eagles (TX) 30-0. The game of the day however, was not a shutout, but could have easily been. The Santa Margarita Titans (CA) and the Park Ridge Falcons (IL) battled back and forth through four scoreless quarters of play. The overtime began, and both teams got a shot at the win. In standard Pop Warner overtime rules, each team begins at the 10-yard line, and plays until one comes out on top. The Falcons struck first, and went in for the score to put them up 6-0. However, they failed on a costly conversion, and it was time for the Titans to have the ball. The Titans quickly answered with a score of their own, and it all came down to the conversion. They decided to kick the extra point, which in Pop Warner rules is worth 2 points, and the kick sailed through the uprights. The Falcons won and move on to face the Raiders in the Championship game.
The Midget division featured more competitive games then the morning games had done. In the feature matchup, the Dale City Cowboys (VA) scored 12 late points in the fourth quarter to pull out the 18-6 victory over the Everett Eagles (MA). The Cowboys move on to play the Marshall Heights Bisons (DC), who defeated the Grand Park Panthers (FL) today 22-14. The Bisons and Cowboys are geographically close in league play, and the two teams prepare for their 3 rd matchup of the season. In the consolation games, the Cedar Crest Comets (TX) knocked off the Poway Spartans (CA) 19-12, and the Alaska South Central Eagles rebounded from an early loss to control the Naperville Titans 32-0.
The Winston-Salem Falcons improved upon the result of their Pee Wee team, and scored late in the third quarter to put them ahead of the Windsor Village Blade (TX) for good 12-8. The Falcons move on to face the Olney Bears (MD), representing the third team from Maryland competing in national championship games at the Pop Warner Super Bowl. The Pine Hills Trojans (FL) scored 28 points before the half, and held on to deafeat the Huntington Beach Chargers (CA) 34-8. The Trojans will face the OD Red Hawks (CA), who held off a pesky Dorchester Eagles (MA) team by the score of 16-6.
Another highlight of the Pop Warner National Championship Week will be tomorrow at the National Cheer and Dance Championships, which features the first day of the two day long event. Pop Warner top scholar and Peace River Conference cheerleader Jazmyn C. Boulware-Wilburn will be covering all of the action from the competitions.
