Pop Warner To Award The Moss Foundation With Its 2010 Humanitarian Award At 50th All-American Scholar Banquet
Pop Warner Little Scholars Inc., the world's largest youth football, cheerleading and dance organization, will present its 2010 Pop Warner Humanitarian Award to the Moss Foundation at its annual All-American Scholar Banquet May 29th at the Philadelphia Convention Center. New York Giants Wide Receiver Sinorice Moss will be on hand to accept the Award for The Moss Foundation and his brother, Washington Redskins Wide Receiver Santana Moss.
The Pop Warner event returns to Philadelphia to commemorate it's 50th Scholar Banquet and will be celebrated with dignitaries, NFL players and personalities in the city where Pop Warner was founded in 1929. Pop Warner will award over $100,000 in scholarships to student athletes at the annual Banquet.
The Moss Foundation was established as a charitable organization dedicated to strengthening and improving – physically and spiritually children in America. In 2006, it adopted the name "House of Moss" and incorporates both brothers – All Pro Wide Receiver Santana Moss and 2008 SuperBowl Champion Sinorice Moss. The Moss Foundation has award-winning programs with Santana's 30/30 Club at Mt. Vernon Senior High School in Virgina and the Foundation has had such an impact with inner-city youth in two Miami-Dade County Cities, that Hialeah and Miami Gardens, have official "Moss Days."
Through the Foundation, the Moss Brothers strive to inspire today's children to believe that through education, hard work and integrity they can alter their circumstances and create path in life where they can accomplish anything. As The Moss Foundation celebrates it's 10th season, Sinorice has established the Dare To Dream Foundation to help challenge children and teachers to take an "I can" attitude in life.
"The impact Sinorice and Santana have had through The Moss Foundation in the Miami community, New York/New Jersey and Washington DC/northern Virginia speaks volumes to their commitment to helping put youth on the right path and emphasizing that education leads to greater opportunities. It represents the ideals we look to instill in Pop Warner participants. We are pleased to recognize The Moss Foundation with our Humanitarian Award," said Mary FitzGerald, Chief Operating Officer of Pop Warner.
The Humanitarian Award is a special honor that Pop Warner reserves for people that have truly had a direct impact on the community; it has only been awarded three times – to Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals in 2005, Josh Cribbs of the Cleveland Browns in 2008 and Bob Sanders of the Indianapolis Colts in 2009 and will be a highlight of this year's banquet.
plAmong the other awards to be given out on Saturday night will be Pop Warner's most prestigious award, The Warner Award and will be presented to Indianapolis Colts Wide Receiver, Pierre Garcon for his efforts for the Haiti Relief Fund. It will mark the first time an active ayer has received the Award. Additional Awardees include:
• Pop Warner NFL Team of the Year: Pittsburgh Steelers
• Pop Warner Inspiration To Youth Award – Julian Edelman, New England Patriots Wide Receiver
• Pop Warner Female Achievement Award – Bonnie Bernstein, Sports Analyst and Radio Personality
• Gold Football Award – Sean Landeta, Former Punter, New York Giants
• Lifetime Achievement Award – Art McNally
The banquet honors the most academically advanced student-athletes from Pop Warner programs nationwide and recognizes several individuals and public figures for their commitment to academics, athletics, communities, and the betterment of youths across America. More than 2,000 people are expected to attend the event.
Pop Warner is the only youth sports organization that requires academic guidelines for its members to participate in its programs. Each year participants with high academic standings (96% GPA) are encouraged to apply for recognition at the event. Also factored into consideration are school-oriented extracurricular activities and community service commitments from the previous year.
This year's All-American Scholars comprise the top one percent of all Pop Warner participants nationwide. Over 8,000 scholar-athletes were named to the First Team, Second Team or Honorable Mention All-American Scholars, based on a score calculated from the student's grade point average and addendum activities.
First Team All-American Scholar is the highest achievement a Pop Warner student-athlete can achieve, with only 35 football participants and 35 cheerleaders and dancers selected per grade level. First Team All-American Scholars in eighth grade and higher are also eligible for one of many scholarships awarded at the banquet.
