Pop Warner Presents 2010 Female Achievement Award To ESPN Radio Host Bonnie Bernstein At The 50th All-American Scholar Banquet

Pop Warner Little Scholars Inc., the world’s largest youth football, cheerleading and dance organization, will present its Female Achievement Award to ESPN Radio Host Bonnie Bernstein at its annual All-American Scholar Banquet May 29th at the Philadelphia Convention Center.

The Pop Warner event returns to Philadelphia to commemorate it’s 50th Scholar Banquet and will be celebrated with dignitaries, NFL players and personalities in the city where Pop Warner was founded in 1929.  Pop Warner will award over $100,000 in scholarships to student athletes at the annual Banquet.

Bonnie Bernstein currently the co-host on ESPN Radio’s “Michael Kay Show” is the youngest journalist on the American Sportscasters Association’s list of Top 15 All-time Female Sportscasters.  Prior to her first full-time hosting role, Bernstein was a studio anchor for ESPN for NFL Live, Outside The Lines, Jim Rome is Burning, first Take and College Football Live.  She also served as a sideline reporter for ABC’s College Football and ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

Bonnie is one of the most recognized reporters along NFL sideline where she spent eight years at CBS Sports, where she was the lead reporter for the NFL and NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Her peers have recognized Bonnie, as being one of the hardest working sideline reporters based on her professionalism and relentless preparation for games.

Bernstein is the fourth sports journalist to win Pop Warner’s Female Achievement Award. ESPN’s Kelly Naqi won in 2006, CBS’ Lesley Visser in 2005 and ABC’s Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts in 2001.

“Bonnie’s reporting on NFL sidelines for CBS for nearly a decade, anchoring for ESPN and work ethic and preparation for games is an inspiration to all of our scholar-athletes.  Her commitment to her profession has established her as one of the best sideline reporters of our time,” said Mary FitzGerald, Chief Operating Officer, Pop Warner Little Scholars. “Bonnie is an exceptional role model that represents the ideals Pop Warner looks to instill in its participants – lifelong values of dedication, commitment and teamwork.”

Previous Female Achievement Award winners include: Rita Benson LeBlanc, Owner and Executive Vice President of the New Orleans Saints (2008), Olympic Gold Medalists Summer Sanders (2009), Natalie Coughlin (2007), Kerri Strug (1999) and Amanda Borden (2003), American Idol Judge Paula Abdul (2000), Sports Journalists Kelly Naqi (ESPN in 2006), Lesley Visser (CBS in 2005) and ABC’s Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts (2001).

  • The Warner Award – Pierre Garcon, Indianapolis Colts Wide Receiver
  • Pop Warner Inspiration To Youth Award – Julian Edelman, New England Patriots Wide Receiver

The banquet honors the most academically advanced student-athletes from Pop Warner programs nationwide and recognizes several individuals and public figures for their commitment to academics, athletics, communities, and the betterment of youths across America.  More than 2,000 people are expected to attend the event.

Pop Warner is the only youth sports organization that requires academic guidelines for its members to participate in its programs.  Each year participants with high academic standings (96% GPA) are encouraged to apply for recognition at the event. Also factored into consideration are school-oriented extracurricular activities and community service commitments from the previous year.

This year’s All-American Scholars comprise the top one percent of all Pop Warner participants nationwide. Over 8,000 scholar-athletes were named to the First Team, Second Team or Honorable Mention All-American Scholars, based on a score calculated from the student’s grade point average and addendum activities.

First Team All-American Scholar is the highest achievement a Pop Warner student-athlete can achieve, with only 35 football participants and 35 cheerleaders and dancers selected per grade level.  First Team All-American Scholars in eighth grade and higher are also eligible for one of many scholarships awarded at the banquet.
