Cleary Simpson Executive Vice President/Sports Illustrated, Group Publisher/Sports Illustrated for Kids and Sports Illustrated Women
The Joseph J. Tomlin Award, named after the founder of PWLS, Inc., is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding character development, physical fitness and scholastic achievement.
Cleary Simpson was the winner of this year's Female Achievement Award, which is presented to a woman who has presented remarkable strength of character and leadership in attaining achievements in her life which inspire others.
Cleary Simpson was appointed as Executive Vice President of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED in November of 1999 to complement her role as Group Publisher of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED FOR KIDS and SPORTS ILLUSTARTED WOMEN.
Ms. Simpson was named Publisher of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED FOR KIDS in December 1992. Under her direction, SI FOR KIDS has grown from a magazine to a premier children's brand, winning numerous awards for its print, online, and television activities.
In addition to serving as Publisher of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED FOR KIDS, Ms. Simpson was given responsibility for SPORTS ILLUSTRATED WOMEN in 1998.
Throughout her years at Time Inc., she has held a number of key marketing and sales positions including Advertising Director for TIME (1978-1991) and Associate Publisher for LIFE (1991-1992).
Ms. Simpson participates annually in the Principal for a Day program in New York City schools and was a nominee of the 1997 W.I.S.E. "Woman of the Year" award. In addition, Ms. Simpson was instrumental in forging the marketing partnership between Time Inc. and the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup.
A 1975 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Connecticut College, Ms. Simpson was a Fulbright Scholar worker in Japan. She lives in New Canaan, CT, with her husband and their three children.
