LAKESHORE RAIDERS WIN POP WARNER’S DIVISION I MIDGET SUPER BOWL
ORLANDO, FL (December 8, 2007) – The Lakeshore Raiders of Jacksonville, FL defeated the Malden Cyclones of Malden, MA by the score of 8-6 in a defensive battle for the 2007 Pop Warner Division I Midget Super Bowl at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.
The Pop Warner Super Bowl began with 64 football teams representing more than 8 Pop Warner regions including teams from both Alaska and Hawaii.
The Lakeshore Raiders victory began with their 28-6 defeat against the Columbus Cougars (OH) during the quarter-final game on Sunday. They moved on to the semi-final championship game, played on Wednesday, December 5, where they defeated defending Pop Warner National Champion the Marshall Heights Bison (DC) 30-14 advancing them to the Pop Warner Super Bowl Championship.
The Raiders jumped off to an early start when quarterback Alexander King threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Devon Howard followed by kicking the extra point to go up
8-0. The Malden Cyclones running back Samie Jean broke away for a 34 yard run falling short of the goal line. Cyclones quarterback Kevin Valley then plunged in for a one-yard touchdown putting the Cyclones on the scoreboard 8-6 in the third quarter.
The Cyclones lined up for the extra point only to have the extra point blocked. Both defenses then held off their opposing teams offense and the Raiders then ran out the clock to capture their first ever Pop Warner Super Bowl Championship. The Cyclones loss marks the second time in three years that a Boston team has lost by the score of 8-6 after having a kick blocked in the Division I Midget Super Bowl.
In 2005, the Dorchester Eagles lost to the Oak Grove Eagles 8-6 after having an extra point blocked. The Division I Pop Warner Midget Super Bowl will be aired on ESPN and ESPN HD on December 27 at 1:00 PM and subsequent airings will follow on the NFL Network.
