“Matadores Tame Mustangs”
“We've been through this kind of game three or four times already during the playoffs, so we knew what we had to do,” reflected Coach Lonnie of the La Miranda Blue Matadores. His Jr. Pee Wee Division 1 team had just taken on the tough Virginia Beach Mustangs and what a game it was!
The first quarter was a tense , scoreless battle for field position between both clubs as first the Matadors, then the Mustangs jockeyed for position. Then, with the second play of the second quarter, the Mustang quarterback squirted through a hole in the La Miranda line and scampered 50 yards to paydirt. A missed PAT put Virginia Beach up at 6-0 with 9:19 to go in the half.
But, the Blue Matadores came blasting back. Taking the ensuing kickoff all the way to the fifty yard line, they then put their between-the-tackles offense to work. At 7:15 left in the half, they punched the ball in from the Mustangs one yard line. The Matadores all-important kick for the PAT was good, and the Big Blue grabbed back the lead at 8-6. The first half ended with no more fireworks.
