Virginia Beach (VA) vs. Vallejo (CA)

“Mustangs Outduel Raiders! ”

The powerful Virginia Beach Mustangs broke from the gate in prime form this morning as they opened their pursuit of a Division 1 Jr. Pee Wee National championship with a convincing win over a slick Raiders team from
Vallejo, California.

“We adjusted to what we they gave us. Our kids and coaches responded so well today.“ reflected Mustang's Head Coach Don Haley. Virginia Beach struck early and often in this game and for good reason. “ When we went on offense, we noticed that their defensive corners were playing soft , said Coach Haley. “ They were leaving the flats wide open. So, we experimented with them a little bit by adjusting to their linebackers and going wide, and we clicked. “ They adjusted all right, spurred by a nifty 70 yard touchdown pass and catch down the right flat spurred by a nifty 70 yard touchdown pass and catch to take the lead at halftime 26-0. to take the lead at halftime 26-0.

Through the first half, and again in the second, the Mustangs played rock solid defense nullifying the Raiders vaunted run and shoot attack. But, the kids from Vallejo never gave up. Twice in the fourth quarter , they uncorked great hook and ladder plays for big gainers. But, in the end , it was just too much Mustangs defense. And, the final score stood Virginia Beach 32 – Vallejo 0 .

Coach Haley gave all the credit today to his players, coaches , fans and especially the Team Mom. “Nothing could have happened this year for us with Valerie Brooks and her total dedication to these kids. She is a saint!”

Congratulations to the mighty Mustangs who now advance to the semi-final round on Wednesday against the hard-charging Matadores from La Miranda, California. And congratulations too for a spirited , never-say-die effort by the Vallejo Raiders. They next play the Columbus Day Stars in the consolation game on Weds. All games this week are at fabulous Disney Wide World of Sports.
