“Indians Stop Steelers!”
The Northampton (PA) Indians went on the warpath today to down the tough Steelers from New Haven, CT in opening round Jr. Pee Wee Division 1 action.
Northampton recovered a New Haven fumble of the opening kickoff and used its vaunted “ball control” offense to march downfield to the Steelers 22 yard line. From there, the Indians southpaw quarterback rolled left and tossed a pass to his wide receiver who made a nifty sprawling catch on the Steelers 11 yard line.
The Indians came right back with another pass to the New Haven 6 yard line before punching the ball up the middle and into the end zone. The PAT was no good and with 4:47 to go in the first quarter, the Indians led 6-0.
The Steelers bounced back with a determined ground game. But, the swarming Indian defense collared the Steeler ball carriers in two critical fourth down attempts to stymie New Haven drives.
Then, late in he first half, Northampton drove down to the Steelers ten yard. Again, a slick ten-yard swing pass to the wide receiver resulted in the Indians second touchdown. The PAT attempt was no good and the first half ended with the score Northampton 12 – New Haven 0 .
In the third quarter, the Indians again used their ball control offense to hammer downfield. Late in the quarter, the Indians drove in for their third touchdown, upping the lead to 18-0. From there, the Northampton defense , sparked by a crew of stunting linebackers, throttled New Haven's aerial game. The final score, Northampton 18-New Haven 0 .
Congratulations to Northampton on a great opening game win! They now play a semi-final match-up on Wednesday with the powerful Mandarin Tigers from Florida.
